Safety tips when using laboratory fume hoods
Safe use of laboratory ventilation cabinets
According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), exposure to toxic substances in the environment leads to 7% to 19% of human cancers.
There may be certain chemicals in the sample or work environment that can increase the risk of cancer - known as occupational carcinogens. If these chemical substances are present in the laboratory, they must be accompanied by a hazard warning and strictly controlled to maintain contact with laboratory personnel within a safe range.
When handling chemicals in the laboratory, please ensure to work in a suitable laboratory ventilation cabinet to reduce the risk of exposure to chemicals. Here are some tips on how to safely use laboratory fume hoods:
Install the fume hood away from any external interference, such as pedestrian flow, door opening, air conditioning, or fans.
Ensure that the exhaust system is turned on before starting work.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, and laboratory gowns.
Place your face outside and practice working at least 15cm away from the surface of the fume hood.
Move carefully and avoid intentional movement to prevent airflow interruption.
If there is a possibility of explosion or eruption, explosion-proof shields should be used.
If a combination window sash is installed, do not open both vertical and horizontal window sashes simultaneously.
Do not remove the airfoil or baffle as they aid in the airflow of the fume hood.
Do not use the fume hood as a storage area for chemicals and reagents as it can interfere with airflow and sealing.
Do not use the sink of the fume hood for waste disposal.
Do not let chemicals evaporate in the fume hood as a means of disposal.
Do not leave uncovered chemical or waste bottles in the laboratory ventilation cabinet.
If you suspect a performance malfunction, please immediately terminate use. Completely close the window sash and stop working.
Do not use perchloric acid in traditional fume hoods as explosive perchlorate may accumulate in the exhaust system.
Perform daily maintenance and certification.
