Advantages and disadvantages of digital oscilloscope


Advantage:
1. Small size, light weight, easy to carry, liquid crystal display
2. It can store waveforms for a long time and amplify the stored waveforms.
3. It is especially suitable for measuring single and low frequency signals. There is no scintillation phenomenon of analog oscilloscope when measuring low frequency signals.
4. More triggering modes include logic trigger, pulse width trigger and so on, besides the pre-trigger that analog oscilloscope does not have.
5. It can be connected with computers, printers and plotters through GPIB, RS232 and USB interfaces. It can print, archive and analyze files.
6. It has powerful waveform processing ability and can automatically measure many parameters such as frequency, rise time, pulse width, etc.
Disadvantages:
1. Distortion is relatively large, because the digital oscilloscope is displayed by sampling waveforms, the less the sampling points are, the greater the distortion is. Usually there are 512 sampling points in the horizontal direction, which are limited by the maximum sampling rate and fewer sampling points near the fastest scanning speed, so the distortion is greater at high speed.
2. The ability to measure complex signals is poor. Because of the limited number of sampling points and the absence of brightness changes in digital oscilloscopes, many waveform details can not be displayed. Although some of them may have two or more brightness levels, this is only a relative difference, coupled with the limited display resolution of the oscilloscope, which makes it impossible to display waveform details. It is still impossible to reproduce the effect of the simulation display.
3. There may be false and confused waveforms. When the sampling clock frequency is lower than the signal frequency, the waveform may not be the actual frequency and amplitude. The bandwidth of digital oscilloscope is closely related to the sampling rate. When the sampling rate is not high, it needs interpolation calculation, so confusing waveforms are easy to appear.
