Xi'an University of science and technology has a long history and profound heritage. The school's history can be traced back to the Department of mining and metallurgy of the school of technology of Beiyang University, which was established in 1895. It moved to the Department of mining and metallurgy of the Northwest Institute of technology in 1938, was incorporated into Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1957, and was separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University to establish an independent Xi'an Institute of mining and technology in 1958. It was one of the only two five-year undergraduate colleges under the former Ministry of coal industry at that time. In 1998, the school implemented "central and local co construction, focusing on local management" and transferred to Shaanxi Province. It was renamed Xi'an University of science and technology in 1999 and Xi'an University of science and technology in 2003.
