ATHENS, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Pericles Panagopoulos, a well-known Greek ship owner, was abducted on Monday morning near his home in Athens, police said.
Panagopoulos, owner of ferry operator Superfast Ferries, was being driven to his office in Piraeus port when three unknown people blocked his vehicle on a road.
The abductors released the driver, who later informed the police of the incident. A massive manhunt was immediately launched by security police.
Police believe the motive for the abduction was to demand ransom money, but the abductors have not yet contacted Panagopoulos' family.
Superfast Ferries operates mainly routes between Greece and Italy and is a subsidiary of the country's largest ferry operator Attica Holdings.
